The values behind IMBY Africa were shaped long before the organization was founded. Growing up in the rural community of Arlington, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, founder Jerome Gayle witnessed practical acts of compassion that left a lasting impression. His grandparents, Doris and Joseph Daly, believed that serving others was simply part of being a good neighbor. Their home became a place where people found encouragement, food, care, and hope.
Those early experiences formed a lifelong conviction that faith should be demonstrated through practical service..

In 2017, Jerome founded In My Backyard, Inc., a Tennessee nonprofit corporation built on one simple belief:

Whether someone lives next door or across the world, every person deserves compassion, dignity, and the opportunity to build a better future.
As an adult, Jerome lived in the United Kingdom before answering a call to missionary service in South Korea, where he spent four years serving alongside local communities and sharing his Christian faith. Today, IMBY Africa partners with local communities, churches, educators, volunteers, and supporters to expand access to clean water, education, food security, healthcare, and sustainable community development.
Although the organization has grown, its purpose remains unchanged:
